XPO Logistics is an award-winning global leader in the provision of transportation and logistics. Operating across 33 countries, they provide pivotal supply chain solutions to the most successful companies in the world. In real terms, this means over 150,000 shipments consisting of over 5 billion inventory items – every single day.
XPO contacted us with an urgent requirement for people during peak season and, in particular, the Black Friday sales event.
Their two existing providers were failing to provide the numbers of quality people to meet these spikes in demand. Both agencies were adamant that the Northampton market was saturated and that further recruitment was impossible.
Undaunted, we accepted the challenge to find 120 warehouse operatives within a working week.
But could we deliver?
Whilst confident in our ability, we also knew that this was a tough ask. We knew that we needed to adapt our methods – and do it very swiftly.
Our vast experience of both the sector and the local area (over 40 years’ worth within the one branch) confirmed that lateral thinking was needed. A conventional approach would be doomed to failure.
As a result, we worked with XPO to look at introducing additional benefits and incentives for their temporary workers. We knew what would make all the difference. Thinking outside of the box had the desired effect.
However, we also knew that to drive home a successful campaign in the timeframe available, we had to launch a tailored programme. This included:
- Targeted and paid-for Social Media advertising
- Open Days at our local branch
- Distribution of regional posters
- Leaflet drop across wide geography
- Creation of ‘Back to work’ employment centres
- Tapping into EU networks
From day one, we knew this was a major challenge. But this is what we thrive on.
The initial call was made to us on the Friday afternoon. By Monday, we already had a flow of people arriving, ensuring that the full 120 target was hit and maintained throughout the peak period. In fact, we registered over 300 candidates in just 3 weeks – all based in Northamptonshire. Remember, two other agencies had stated that the talent pool was dry.
Our expertise proved that a carefully targeted Social Media campaign – along with complementary communications – was able to deliver.
