Skills shortages continue to blight Engineering and Technical sector according to new REC report

Newly- elected Chair of REC Engineering and Technical Philip Higgins has today launched the Engineering & Technical Industry Research Profile.

Despite high standards of technical and engineering education in the UK, as well as government support, the sector is beset with skills shortages with the most skilled workers still in demand during this current recession.

The profile suggests that the biggest shortage of graduates lay in mechanical engineering, with electronics and electrical engineers also in short supply,

Commenting on the research, Philip Higgins said: “The issue is not only how we can attract skills to the UK but also work with universities and higher education authorities to make sure we’re promoting engineering as a career. This is becoming even more critical given the number of major engineering projects planned for the UK over the next 10 years.”

Speaking on his successful election, Philip said: “The industry has changed significantly over the last ten years, not least through the introduction of new legislation such as IR35, WTR, Managed Service Company Legislation and the future introduction of the AWD, all of which have, or have had, a significant impact on the way we conduct business.

“My first challenge will be to raise the profile of the REC in the engineering sector and to create a culture whereby REC members willingly contribute to debates and issues that are relevant to our sector.”
