Migrant cap must align to economic growth

The government needs to ensure any migrant cap does not hinder economic growth, according to Ian Godden, chairman of UK aerospace, defence and security trade organisation ADS.

Godden says: “We understand why the government wishes to control immigration but we would encourage them to do so in a manner that aligns with their priorities for economic growth.

“The current proposals require some modifications to take into account the existing skills shortages and requirements of our members.

“The UK is number one in Europe and second only to the US in aerospace and defence.

“They are high-tech, high-value sectors employing over half a million people in the UK that generate over £60bn per year to the economy. The priority at the moment should be for economic growth and the proposed cap on migrants should support this aim.

“Aerospace, defence and security will be crucial to boosting the UK economy and we look forward to discussing this issue with the government to ensure that we can continue to deliver for Britain.

“ADS appreciates that a robust immigration policy is required for the UK, but this must be counter-balanced with the need to stimulate the UK economy and make it an attractive place for companies to do business.”
