The new Investors in People Standard

The Investors in People (IIP) Standard is a business improvement tool designed to advance an organisation's performance through its people. A revised version of the Standard was launched in November 2004, and replaces the previous standard from 1 January 2006.
 
IIP now mirrors the business planning cycle (plan, do, review), so that organisations can follow the Standard and implement it in their own planning cycle. There is also emphasis on continuous improvement, encouraging organisations to review and improve their people-development plans. The IIP Standard is built on three principles:

  • plan – developing strategies to improve the performance of the organisation
  • do – taking action to improve the performance of the organisation
  • review – evaluating the impact on the performance of the organisation

Each principle is broken down into a number of “indicators” - there are ten in all - of what good practice means and how to know when you are achieving it. They make clear the responsibilities of managers in leadership, management and development of people, and encourage you to involve employees in decision-making.

The IIP Standard isn't focused solely on staff training. To achieve the Standard you need to think through your business strategy and ensure that your training plans will drive it forward.

Non–recognised organisations can now get a profile assessment, showing them how they perform against the Investors in People Standard.

Organisations wishing to use the Investors in People Standard can work with an Investors in People Adviser through their local Business Link.
