Fit the training to your needs
Training resources - in-house delivery
Many businesses choose to train employees in-house. It can offer a number of advantages over external training providers. Internal training can be:
- cheaper than equivalent external courses
- tailored to your specific business' needs
- scheduled for a time that suits your business
- time effective - employees do not spend additional time or money travelling
However, there are a number of disadvantages that you should be aware of:
- employees might not take the training seriously
- you might not have a suitable trainer or the necessary resources in-house
- you risk passing on existing inefficiences or poor business practices
For internal training to be effective, you need to ensure you have the appropriate expertise and resources in-house. You will have to dedicate the necessary resources to your training programme that could include management time, an experienced trainer, training or course materials, equipment such as PCs, telephones or machinery and space in which to carry out the training.
If you are using internal trainers, you should consider sending them on a train-the-trainer course to ensure their training methods and materials are up to date and effective. Alternatively, if you don't have the necessary skills in-house, you could buy an off-the-shelf or tailor-made course.
There are tailor-made courses covering a wide range of topics and you should be able to find one that meets your needs. They can be targeted, confidential and cost a fraction of the price of sending each employee on an external scheme. Typically you can choose whether you want to use an internal or external trainer to run the course.
