Getting new workers started

Tailor the induction to the worker

The majority of new starters will need a similar type of induction. However, some new starters may need to have an adapted programme to take into account their special circumstances.

School leavers starting their first job should be encouraged to take part in training. They must also receive adequate health and safety information regarding health and safety risks, as young people are often unaware of risks in the workplace.

People returning to work after a long period away may also need extra encouragement. It is important to make them aware of major new developments.

Workers with disabilities may have special needs in terms of access, using equipment and communicating with colleagues. Learn about disability services for employers at the Jobcentre Plus website. You should also be sensitive to cultural or religious customs and make sure your induction process is not discriminatory.
