Your responsibilities for health, safety and the environment
Maintain high standards of occupational health
Health and safety rules don't just require you to take steps to prevent accidents. You also have a responsibility for the general welfare of your employees.
You are legally required to meet various basic standards. For example, you have to provide adequate space, lighting and toilet facilities. See our guide on how to meet minimum workplace standards.
Generally, you should ensure your employees enjoy a healthy working environment and good working practices. For example, stress is an increasingly common complaint and can cause illness. Read about work-related stress on the HSE website.
Other areas of concern include:
- bullying and harassment
- health issues such as drugs, alcohol and passive smoking
- incorrectly designed workstations
- insufficient rest breaks and long hours
You can read about common occupational health issues on the HSE website.
Your approach is likely to include providing some occupational health support and advice. You also need to include appropriate rules in your discipline and grievance procedures to deal with any harassment or bullying that takes place.
See our guide on occupational health and welfare: an overview.
