Where to get help with employment relations

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) aims to improve organisations and working life through better employment relations.

Acas can advise, mediate or conciliate to help prevent or resolve disputes - find out about Acas at the Acas website.

The Race and Equality Advisory Service (REAS), part of Acas, has a national network of experienced advisors who work in large organisations, offering advice on policies and recommending improvements where needed.

Equality Direct, also part of Acas, is a confidential telephone advice service for small businesses. It provides help about race, sex, age and disability issues - learn about the rights of employees at work at the Acas website.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) is the leading agency working to eliminate sex discrimination in the UK. It has authority to bring prosecutions under the Sex Discrimination Act and the Equal Pay Act - learn about tribunal and court proceedings at the EOC website.

The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) is concerned with promoting equality for disabled people in the UK. Besides its law enforcement functions it publishes codes of practice and advice about the treatment of disabled people - get information about the law relating to disabled people at the DRC website.

The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) works with both the public and private sectors to promote equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their colour, race, national or ethnic origin - learn about the work of the CRE at the CRE website.

The Employers Forum on Age (EFA) is an employer-led initiative to promote the benefits of a mixed-age workforce and to pledge to make age discrimination in the workplace a thing of the past. Learn about age discrimination legislation at the EFA website.

Several employers' organisations, including the British Chambers of Commerce, Federation of Small Businesses and the Institute of Directors, offer further advice on employment law.
