UK factory activity 'gains pace'
UK manufacturing activity grew at its fastest pace in 15 years in January, a survey has suggested. The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply's purchasing managers' index rose to 56.7 last month, up from a revised 54.6 in December.

Pay freezes predicted for 2010
Workers face a second year of pay freezes despite rising inflation and the UK's emergence from recession, according to a report. The proportion of wage freezes is increasing, according to the Labour Research Department (LRD), which compiles data for trade unions.

Scrap fixed retirement age, says equality body
Older workers will be able to continue in their jobs well into their 70s, 80s and even 90s, under proposals published today to scrap the national retirement age.

Unemployment down in last quarter
The number of people unemployed has fallen again, according to figures from the Office for the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Total unemployment stood at 2.46m for the quarter to December, a fall of 3,000 on the previous quarter.

From 17th February, gangmasters and umbrellas companies who abuse tax free allowance travel schemes will have their licences revoked if they breach guidance issued by the Gangmasters Licencing Authority (GLA).

Any increase in National Insurance Contributions (NICs) would be the most damaging tax rise for the government to impose on British business, according to the British Chambers of Commerce's (BCC) latest monthly business survey.

Increasing minimum wage would harm job creation, say business leaders
Business leaders have warned that an increase in the minimum wage could harm youth employment and job creation. The CBI has spoken out against increasing the statutory minimum pay rate, after rumours emerged that the Labour party may pledge to increase it in their forthcoming manifesto.
