“Shocking abuse”
The GLA has revoked the licence of a Cambridgeshire gangmaster after uncovering evidence of “shocking abuse”.
The authority received a catalogue of complaints that ELS Recruitment director Shamus Paul had allegedly assaulted one worker and that others had been “threatened and verbally abused” by him and his staff.
The investigation into the treatment of staff supplied to Leek supplier Allpress Farms in Peterborough, also found hours deducted from workers’ pay with no explanation, no statutory sick pay and no evidence of health and safety training. The Licence has been revoked with immediate effect...

'Sick note culture' costing £100bn every year
The full scale of Britain's "sick note culture" is revealed this month as the largest review ever conducted into the problem shows that illness and disability cost Britain more than £100 billion a year.
The drain on the economy from benefits claimants and those who miss work through ill health is "unsustainable" and threatens the very fabric of society, warns Dame Carol Black, the national director for health and work, in her report. Under her proposals doctors, social services and counsellors will be brought in to try to get long-term absentees back to work. At the same time, measures will be introduced to prevent people with minor conditions from joining the long-term sick.
Dame Carol has been commissioned by the Department of Health and the Department for Work and Pensions to advise on how to improve the health of those in work and reduce the number claiming sickness benefits...

Sex discrimination
Changes to the Sex Discrimination Act (1975) come into effect this month, which include an increased employer liability for sexual harassment experienced in the workplace.
The amendments, which have been introduced to meet requirements outlined in the EC Equal Treatment Directive, will also extend the right of protection for pregnant women and those on maternity leave.
On 20 May, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) hosts its Diversity Conference at Sofitel St James Hotel, London. The conference will discuss discrimination law and good practice including expert opinion on current legislative proposals. While diversity and inclusion present both opportunities and challenges to employers, the CIPD has previously criticised the government for failing to simplify discrimination laws which cause so much confusion amongst employers...

Bosses 'chose attractive job candidates when recruiting'
The majority of bosses choose attractive candidates when recruiting staff, according to new research. Figures produced by law firm Peninsula suggest that 88 per cent of managers admitted to having given jobs to the best looking interviewees
Meanwhile, 92 per cent of respondents who were involved in interviews stated that appearance at the job interview can influence their decision as to whether or not to take on an individual. Business faces Corporate Manslaughter Act
A new era of health and safety regulation for businesses, which could face considerable penalties if they are found guilty of the offence, has been ushered in on 6 April when the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act came into force.
What is the new law and why was it brought into force? For more than ten years there has been significant political commitment to reforming the law in relation to workplace deaths. Successive high profile accidents have led to renewed calls for changes in the law following failed prosecutions against large companies and against individuals for manslaughter...

Wave goodbye to the nine to five, and say hello to virtual enterprise
Within a decade millions of workers will be at home juggling their careers with caring for children and older relatives, Britain's leading management institute forecast this month.
Dreams of a future when technological advances would liberate us from the daily drudge and allow more time for leisure appear to be fading, with futurologists predicting less talk about "work-life balance" and more about "work-life integration".
A report on the nature of employment in 2018 predicts an exodus from the traditional workplace caused partly by environmental pressure to reduce the carbon footprint of commuting and partly by the demographic pressure of an ageing population, with fewer employees able to avoid looking after older relatives, leading to a blurring of boundaries between family and career...
